In 2021, the Royal Mint beefed up the security of its Gold Britannias with the introduction of four security elements on the reverse side of the coins. The two most obvious features are the latent security image and the new textured waves in the background. The texture of the wave lines gives the impression of motion as the coin moves around, while the latent security image switches between a locked padlock or a trident head as the coin moves. The other features include tincture lines on the shield and a micro-text engraving around Britannia.

The obverse of 2022 British Gold Britannia Coins features a right-profile relief of Queen Elizabeth II. England’s longest-reigning monarch, Elizabeth II features here at the age of 89 in a design that is the fifth for British currency during her reign. This portrait shows the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem.

On the reverse side of the 2022 1/2 oz Gold Britannia Coin is Philip Nathan’s 1987 image of Britannia. Since the late-17th century, Britannia has consistently featured on British currency. This design has been a staple of the Britannia Series for more than 35 years now.
